HIV Africa2010: Emily Daniel

Have you been to Africa before? If so, how many times?
This was my first trip to Africa.

What was the most difficult part of the journey?
Living without all of the comforts we have at home.

What was the most fulfilling part of the journey?
Being able to see the joy on the children faces when we were able to give them a toy or soccer ball or something else they wanted.

Were there any experiences that happened you didn’t expect?
I wasn’t expecting to connect to the people so quickly. I was also surprised that for the most part there wasn’t too much of a language barrier.

Did you connect with any of the locals? What was their name and story?
Yes, while in Kampala, I became really close to two girls at Moses’ church. Their names were Joyce and Brenda. I am pretty sure Joyce has at least one living parent and I do not think Brenda has any. Brenda really touched my heart when she was singing for all of us the Sunday morning we joined them in church. Along with the other children, she sang about how thankful she was that God had given her life. I was so moved to see all of the children so thankful for being alive, even though they didn’t have much else. Seeing this really put things in perspective of how I need to be more appreciative of all of the things God has blessed me with.

What would you say to someone who may be considering going next year to HIV Africa2011?
If God is calling you, definitely go! It will change your life!!
