Belize & Beyond Mission Update: March 2011

“And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,” 1 Timothy 1:12

Clive Welsh at the NRB Convention 2011

February was a short month that left as quickly as it came and seemed as if there was a constant attempt to beat the clock with much to be done before attending the annual National Religious Broadcasters Convention at the end of February. I travel back and forth between the mainland of Belize and the island where the radio ministry is located as well as an occasional trips internationally and each trip takes time to prepare for (especially with the new staffs at Lighthouse) which makes me feel as if I constantly living out of a suitcase. Such is the life of Clive and I’m grateful for the opportunity to do what I do for the sole purpose of knowing Him and making Him know and touching lives every step of the way. Thank you for being a part of this grand venture by your heartfelt prayers, encouragement, support and sacrificial giving!

National Religious Broadcasters Convention:

Dr. Frank Wright, President of National Religious Broadcasters Association making open remarks at the start of the Convention.

This year NRB Convention, held in Nashville, Tennessee was filled with encouragement from teachers such as Chuck Swindoll, Ravi Zacharias, James McDonald and Frank Wright. Each year the Lord does something specific at NRB for me and this year I couldn’t help but have a deeper appreciation for the community of Christian broadcasters that have played a major part in the ministry of Lighthouse Christian Radio. To name a few of those that I found myself thanking God for: Dr. Frank Wright, president of NRB, Galcom International, Focus on the Family, Unshackled, 5Q, Sharing Ministries, Gospel for Asia and many others. I came away edified, encouraged and refreshed to get back to the task of proclaiming God’s Word and love through Christian Media in Belize. I’ve been very blessed and grateful to be a member of the National Religious Broadcasters Association and the rich fellowship and support received from my relationship and affiliation over the years!

Isaac Dueck, Margaret & Jacob Penner and Clive Welsh with John Fuller of Focus on the Family.

Another highlight for me this year was to be with the folks from Horizon Radio as this was their first NRB since beginning their broadcasting in western district of Belize. It gave me great thrill to share with many of the answers to prayers and all that the Lord did to make this, another dream to become a reality. I often reminded Isaac Dueck, managing director of Horizon Radio, that the dream and vision was birth at an NRB Convention many years ago when he accompanied me as a board member of Lighthouse Christian Radio. We rejoice daily and are humbled by what the Lord is doing with Horizon Radio as the reports come in of lives that are blessed by the teaching and the music aired 24/7. You can hear Horizon Radio being played in many of the stores and businesses in the Mennonite Community of Spanish Lookout which brings such joy to my heart each time I hear it. Glory to God for all He has done, is doing and will continue to do!

Belize Christian Media Fellowship:This year six Christian Radio Ministries were represented at the NRB and 5 of those are members of the newly formed Belize Christian Media Fellowship: Destiny Radio, Lighthouse Christian Radio, Horizon Radio, Vision Radio and Toledo Christian Radio! It was a tremendous blessing sharing with Dr. Frank Wright, president of the NRB, about this endeavor over the past few years and to be able to inform him of the dream becoming a reality. He expressed desire to assist us in any way possible in our developmental stages and rejoiced in what God is doing in Belize with Christian Media. We look forward to our continued relationship with the NRB in assisting us to establishing our Fellowship to effectively reach the Nation of Belize with the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Lighthouse Christian Radio News:

Having a young staff, young in age as well as length of time at the Lighthouse, was a concern for me when planning to leave for Tennessee for the NRB Convention. The Lord truly blessed the ministry in my absence as the guys held down the fort and did a very good job under the leadership of Edler Blas, my Intern Assistant who has been with us now for 3 months. Elmer Montero has been on-board for 5 months and just recently came on staff on a full-time basis and Emil Lamb just completed his second month. All 3 are Belize nationals and in a full-time status and 2 are living on-site in our Staff Apartment. I’m really blessed with each of them with the various gifts and abilities that contribute to a great team dynamics. None of these guys have had any radio broadcasting training with the exception of Edler who worked in the radio station at the Calvary Chapel San Salvador while attending Bible School. They are all doing a tremendous job and I’m really blessed to be a part of such a team and looking forward now to proceed with all of the ideas and vision I have to enlarge our ministry scope on the island. Please pray for us as we work through growing pains and discipling with Emil as a new born babe in Christ with the blessings and challenges that comes along with that.

Special request music hour:

Elmer, Edler and Emil during the Special Request Hour on Lighthouse Christian Radio

We are greatly encouraged by the response from our “3 to 4 Special Request Hour” where we take request and dedications from our listeners by phone or text messages. That hour really flies by quickly as the three E-guys: Elmer, Edler and Emil responds to each request in both English and Spanish but most of our listeners during that time period has been mostly Spanish. That hour has become one of our favorite time and the guys are having a lot of fun trying to get in as many request as possible in that hour. Another opportunity of being more involved in the lives of our listeners. Please pray for us as we seek to go online and stream our broadcasting on the internet in the future.

Lives touching lives:

As most of you know, most of the folks that I minister to on a daily basis are those who are fatherless or have no father figure/role model in their lives. Well, the day after returning back to Belize, I stopped to check my mail box at the Post Office and was drawn to a young man sitting outside on the steps of the Post Office. A scripture wrist-band on his hand grabbed my attention and I began asking him questions about his wrist-band and found out that he was a believer. I was impressed by his bold stand for the gospel and was excited about this ‘divine appointment’.

Florencio as we tour Friendly Farm, Spanish Lookout with several other guys I disciple/mentor.

As we talked it wasn’t long before he began to share his heart about his relationship with his father, or better put his lack of relationship with his father and could see the pain, hurt, bitterness and unforgiveness in his eyes and hear it pouring out from his heart. We ended up spending several hours together that day and several more hours a few days later with several of the other guys that I meet with on a regular basis when on the mainland. Hi name is Florencio, a Mayan, one of the many ethnic groups that make up the country of Belize. I was allowed of the Lord to share the Father’s heart of God with him. It truly was a blessing to see the change God did in his life in such a short time. I marveled again of the immense need for fathers to reflect the Heavenly Father rightly to their children especially their sons. Please pray for Florencio that God would continue healing and revealing His great love and grace to him!

Planning for the summer:

Erick Aguliar, Ben Barkman and Clive discuss the Summer Bible Camps/VBS in Spanish Lookout and Los Tambos Village.

Plans are being made for the month of July as we are expecting several mission teams to participate in the ministries of Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship in and around Spanish Lookout and with Lighthouse Christian Radio on Ambergris Caye. The teams coming this summer will be doing various Bible Camps/VBS for several Villages surrounding Spanish Lookout, Amazing Grace and Calvary of Cayo before traveling to the island for sports outreaches and further ministries as in previous years. One of the villages that will be hosting the teams this summer will be Los Tombas Village, where a new church plant of Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship where Erik and Magdalena Aguilar, missionaries from Calvary Chapel Salvador are ministering. Please pray for the teams planning to come down to Belize this summer; for provisions, spiritual preparation and the plans!
