Bringing Clean Water and Lasting Hope to Over 5,000 People in Fort Portal, Uganda

Access to clean water is something many of us take for granted. We turn on a faucet, fill a glass, and never think twice. But for thousands of families in Fort Portal, Uganda, clean water has long been difficult to find. Many have relied on unsafe water sources that put their health at risk and required long walks each day just to meet their family’s basic needs.

Thanks to the generosity of faithful supporters, He Intends Victory has completed a new hand-dug well in Fort Portal, Uganda, bringing clean, safe water to more than 5,000 people in the surrounding community.

A Well That Changes Lives

A reliable source of clean water impacts nearly every part of daily life.

Families no longer have to depend on contaminated water that can spread diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Children are healthier and miss fewer days of school. Mothers spend less time walking to distant water sources and more time caring for their families or earning an income. Older adults and those living with HIV have access to safer water, reducing the risk of waterborne illnesses that can be especially dangerous for those with weakened immune systems.

The benefits extend beyond health. Reliable access to water helps families grow vegetables, care for livestock, prepare meals safely, and improve sanitation. It strengthens the entire community by giving people one less daily burden to carry and one more reason to look toward the future with hope.

For many in Fort Portal, this well is more than a construction project. It is a daily reminder that they are loved, remembered, and supported by brothers and sisters in Christ around the world.

Building a Hand-Dug Well

Unlike mechanized boreholes that require large drilling equipment, this project was completed as a hand-dug well, a process that relies on skilled local workers and a great deal of determination.

The project begins by carefully selecting a location where groundwater is known to be accessible. Once the site is chosen, experienced workers dig the well by hand, carefully removing soil one bucket at a time. As the excavation gets deeper, the work becomes slower and more challenging, requiring great care to keep the well safe and stable.

When the water table is reached, the walls of the well are reinforced with concrete rings or masonry to prevent collapse and protect the water from contamination. A secure concrete apron is then built around the opening to help keep surface runoff and debris out of the well. Finally, a hand pump is installed, allowing families to draw clean water safely and efficiently for years to come.

Although the work is labor-intensive, a properly constructed hand-dug well can provide dependable water for an entire community for decades when it is maintained well.

A Legacy of Hope

The impact of this well will continue long after the construction crew has gone home.

Every bucket of water drawn represents healthier children, stronger families, and new opportunities. Every day, people who once struggled to find safe water will instead find hope waiting at the well.

This is the beauty of sustainable ministry. One project continues blessing thousands of lives every single day.
